About this site
Please mail us if any links are broken or you experience difficulties with the site. In case of difficulty with links you may wish to use a search engine to find the page you want to visit.

Our mail system asks you to retype some letters from the name you typed in. This is a way of stopping people automating junk mail production. It will appear to fail if you have typed any spaces before or after your name - you may not see them on the screen but the computer knows they are there. It also matches upper and lower case correctly, so "J Smith" is not the same as "j smith". The check letters(assuming 1st, 3rd and last 3 letters) will be "JSith" in the first case and "jsith" in the second(ignore the quotation marks in this illustration).

This site uses Cascading Style Sheets. To enjoy all the benefits you may need to upgrade your browser. The Webmaster recommends Mozilla Firefox -  downloaded here (approx 5Mb). It is often included on the cover disks with PC magazines.
It also uses MySQL,PHP and SSI, all included in our Host's package.

ACCESSIBILITY.
We have tried to make this site as accessible as possible and tested it using WAVE 3.0 - Web Accessibility Versatile Evaluator. At the moment some of the items are displayed as images but we hope to apply OCR and display as text. You may find it useful to turn off  the page style (in Firefox - Menu item View;Page style; No style). Please email how to do the same in MS Internet Explorer. Please email us if you have suggestions to improve accessibility.

If you are looking for software to read the screen aloud We have tried the free HAL Reader .
When you run the install program it will set HAL up so it starts every time you start Windows. HAL has crashed a few times, but worked again after closing the browser and restarting it. To read a web page you need to highlight all the text and copy to the clipboard. In Firefox the key sequence is {Ctrl}+{a} to select All and then {Ctrl}+{c} to copy to clipboard. HAL will then start speaking. HAL also speaks any windows pop ups without being requested.

We have added a menu item to let you choose your own background colour.
You can make the screen more readable in Firefox by changing the colour scheme as displayed in the following screenshot:
Choose Menu item Tools...Options to display the Options window and then clicking on the Colours button will show the colours dialogue. On this you can change text and background colours. Uncheck the 'Allow pages to choose their own colours' box  and click OK buttons. Next time you reload the page it will be shown in your preferred colours.

Some downloadable forms are in Adobe Portable Document Format(PDF)- download the Reader here (approx 19Mb).

We used some additional software to make the site. This may be of benefit to other webmasters so details are included here:

Pages are designed using Quanta Plus - downloadable here.(6.6Mb) and NVU - downloadable here.(6.6Mb)

The Picture gallery uses Tiny Web Gallery (1.8Mb); It needs no separate thumbnail creator and it will display PDFs and play video and other multimedia files. (You do need to create a jpeg linker for multimedia etc). Neither does it use a separate database management system such as MySQL.

Email addresses are cloaked to minimise the risk of them being harvested by malware creators. Details can be supplied to bona fide voluntary organisations and clubs.

All the above software is free, Freeware or Open Source. Although it is free for private use at the moment(Feb 2008) there may be a licence fee payable if you want to use it in the future or a commercial environment.
